Mira Costa’s softball team is off to a fast start as the Mustangs continue their quest for a Bay League title with key games during the next two weeks.
Coach Dick Amberik’s Mustangs are 11-4-1 on the season and have a 2-0 in Bay League action. Two of Mira Costa’s losses were to Cypress, the fourth-ranked team in Division 1. The Mustangs are looking to get back into the Division 3 top ten after holding the No. 6 spot on March 18.
Mira Costa defeated defending champion Peninsula 9-2 last week in its first home game of the season. Sophomore Brittany Werre continued her torrid season slamming a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead.
Werre is leading the team with a .510 batting average, 26 hits, eight doubles and three home runs. She also has driven in 22 runs.
Sophomore Kasey Hutton went 2 for 4 with four RBIs including a two-run home run in the first inning and senior center fielder Taylor Glover went 3 for 5. Glover is batting .500 this season and is 18 for 18 in stolen base attempts. Her 25 runs scored lead the team.
Sophomore Dillan Boada, a transfer from Notre Dame Academy, picked up the win. Boada is 10-3 on the season with a 1.70 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 74 innings of work.
The Mustangs routed Leuzinger 12-0 Friday and will host West Torrance Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. On Friday, Mira Costa travels to rival Redondo Union for a 7 p.m. contest before playing in the La Mirada Tournament on Saturday.
The Mustangs complete the first round of Bay League action Wednesday, April 24 when they host Palos Verdes in a 3:15 p.m. contest.
Friday’s game at Redondo quite possibly could be a game of undefeated Bay League teams. Highlighted by freshman Allison Betty’s two triples, Redondo beat West 11-4 then defeated Palos Verdes 9-1 last Friday to improve its record to 5-9 and 2-0 in league.
Sophomores Brigid Antonelli and Breanna Miskimen are both batting over .400 and fellow sophomore Morgan Moczygemba has turned in a solid first half of the season.
Coach Jennifer Dessert’s Sea Hawks host Leuzinger Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. Following its game against Mira Costa, Redondo plays at Peninsula on Wednesday, April 24 at 3:15 p.m.
