Mira Costa student arrested for alleged threats, drugs

A 16-year-old Mira Costa High School student was arrested on Tuesday at his home for alleged possession of marijuana for sale and criminal threats to Mira Costa students and staff members.

“The student who made the threats will be suspended pending a recommendation for expulsion, the maximum disciplinary consequence allowed under California Education Code,” wrote Principal Ben Dale in a letter to parents. “Staff will be working with the student and the family to provide as much support as possible to help them overcome this difficult challenge.”

“We live in a time where threats of any kind must be taken very seriously,” wrote Superintendent of Schools Michael Matthews to parents.

Matthews noted that the School Board recently adopted an anti-bullying program for elementary and middle schools, and intervention counselors for the middle and high schools.

“If there is one lesson I can impart to all parents and teachers from this incident, it is that I am thankful for parents and teachers who make efforts to talk to and listen to our children and help them make good choices,” Matthews wrote.

Police are investigating the specifics of the alleged threats.
