Mira Costa sweeps CIF football honors

After leading Mira Costa back-to-back Bay League titles and a CIF Western Division championship, Head Coach Don Morrow was named as the CIF Western Division Coach of the Year. Morrow joined 10 players – including two Players of the Year — from the Mustangs football team who were selected to the All-CIF first team.

Nunn’s reception on a critical 3rd-and-12 play kept the winning drive alive in Mira Costa’s 24-21 victory over Alemany in the championship game. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound receiver/defensive back hauled in 51 passes for 1,190 yards and 14 touchdowns during the season. He added three touchdowns on punt returns and had seven interceptions on defense.

Lineman J.R. Tavai earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in the CIF Western Division and the Bay League. Tavai led a Mustang defense that forced 25 turnovers and allowed an average of just 17.4 points per game. The 6-foot-1, 240-pound junior lineman tied for the team lead in tackles with 92 and had seven sacks. Mira Costa’s defense surrendered just 13 points in the first quarter the entire season.
Teammates joining Nunn and Tavai on the All-CIF and All-Bay League first teams were running back Morgan Reece, quarterback Kyle Demarco, offensive lineman Andrew Brenner, kicker Alex Norocea, defensive back Jackson Morrow, linebacker Kellen Lockwood, and defensive lineman Jordan Tavai. Mustang defensive lineman Jake Jelmini made the All-CIF team and the Bay League’s second team.

Mira Costa defensive back Rico Wright was named to the All-Bay League first team. Mustangs selected to the all-league second team were linebacker Marcus Probasco and offensive linemen Chad Jenson and Nick Kosmata.
Redondo two-way standout Ryan Hyman was selected as the Bay League’s Offensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-CIF team.
Hyman, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior receiver/defensive back caught 52 passes for 1,163 yards and 17 touchdowns for Redondo, the Bay League runner-up. He also scored three times running the ball.
Redondo had two underclassmen named to the All-Bay League first team – junior offensive lineman John Miller and sophomore linebacker Ryan Spiwak. Junior offensive lineman Brett Darragh made the team for Mira Costa.
Redondo players earning second-team honors were quarterback Chris Mares, kicker Nick Diaz, defensive lineman Nathaniel Garcia, linebacker Fernando Navarro and defensive backs Danny Marquez and J.D. MacGillvray.

All-CIF selections in the Northwest Division included quarterback Mike Bundy and defensive back Jimmy Quinones from El Segundo along with Brandon Tobias of North.
Northwest champion Serra, of Gardena, placed nine players on the All-CIF team, including Offensive Player of the Year, receiver Robert Woods. Serra’s Scott Altenberg was named Coach of the Year.
In the Northeast Division, running back Chudi Iregbulem, offensive lineman Michael Mavredakis, receiver Trevor Niemann and defensive lineman Hank Trumball represented Chadwick. ER
