Mira Costa head football coach Don Morrow is known for lining up tough opponents on the Mustang’s non-league schedule and the 2013 campaign is no different.
The boys from Manhattan Beach traveled to Sherman Oaks Friday to face powerhouse Notre Dame in the season opener for both teams but the host Knights were all from being hospitable.
Notre Dame limited Mira Costa to a pair of field goals in a 42-6 win that was put out of reach with 21 third-quarter points after four plays of 20 yards or more in the first half.
Kicker Casey Sublette accounted for Mira Costa’s only points in the game with field goals at the end of the first half and early in the second half.
Running back Sebastian Franck-Love led Mira Costa’s offense with 102 yards on 17 carries, including a 33-yard run. Brandon Mills added 37 yards on 10 carries.
Quarterback Greg Briskin completed 5 of 9 passes for 48 yards and backup Jacob Silvera went 4 for 8 for 105 yards while trying to spark the Mustang’s offense.
Mira Costa senior receiver Harrison Morrow, the head coach’s third and final son to go through the Mustangs football program, led the team with five catches for 119 yards.
Fortunately for Mira Costa, it has an early-season bye this week giving the Mustangs two weeks to lick their wounds and prepare for Downey, the defending Southeast Division champions.
Downey is coming off an 11-3 season when it won the San Gabriel Valley League but played to a rare scoreless tie against Mayfair on Friday.
