A unprecedented outage left some 3,500 residents and businesses throughout Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach without power Thursday, caused by a construction mishap at the Manhattan Beach library site, a Southern California Edison official said Friday.
According to Scott Gobble of Southern California Edison, a contractor working on site of the new library construction on Highland Avenue and 13th Street unintentionally dug into an underground service vault and pulled out the cable. The incident affected two circuits — the first servicing around 2,800 customers and the latter around 700, including City Hall and the Police/Fire Station.
Power went out around 3 p.m. Thursday. The affected perimeter bordered Marine Avenue to the north, Huntington Lane to the south, Vail to the east and the ocean to the west, Gobble said.
The first circuit had its power restored prior to 5 p.m. Thursday, while the second circuit, including City Hall, wasn’t restored until 4 a.m. Friday, Gobble said.
