New attention given to Pier restrooms

Efforts are underway to improve Redondo Pier restrooms after a review prompted by complaints to city council members and the mayor.

Public works officials gave a report at the Oct. 19 city council meeting.

Since the summer, each restroom on the Pier has been painted and had other cosmetic work done — with more scheduled through the end of 2022. Three new restrooms will be built at the end of the new Monstad fishing pier. Two will be ADA compliant.

“We’ll stay at it, but we realize we have a long way to go,” said Assistant City Manager Mike Wizansky.

In June, the city allocated $400,000 for restroom improvements — byway of bond proceeds from refinanced PERS (Public Employees Retirement System) obligations.

“I’m hoping the work is (complete) in a maximum of three years,” said Councilman Todd Loewenstein, whose district (Two) includes the pier. “It’s also important to the business owners there.”

Mayor Bill Brand noted that the condition of the Pier restrooms impact visitors’ overall experience.

“I’ll use the term ‘nightmarish,’” he said.

Future work includes replacing the restrooms behind Quality Seafood, which have weight-bearing walls, and cannot be made ADA compliant.

City employees will provide the labor. Public Works Director Ted Semaan noted that more funding may be needed to do all that the council has asked for.

Councilman Christian Horvath said later that the restroom improvements were to have been done by the failed CenterCal project.

“Now the city has to do what it’s gotta do until something else comes along, if ever,” he said.

In August, the city council hired a Los Angeles landscape architecture firm to plan recreational amenities for the International Boardwalk, Seaside Lagoon and Moonstone Park. The plan is due for completion in one year. ER
