A man is hospitalized in critical condition following a shattering collision at the intersection of Aviation and Artesia Boulevards today.

Redondo Beach Police say the crash happened around 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 2. Early indications are that one vehicle was traveling southbound on Aviation, while the other was headed Eastbound on Artesia.

The collision was so violent that one of the vehicles wound up in the parking lot of a nearby Shell station, its contents strewn across the area. Witnesses say the driver of that vehicle, a middle-aged male, was ejected from the vehicle.

That driver was taken to Harbor General Trauma Center in critical condition. The other driver involved in the crash, also a middle-aged male, was still at the scene an hour after the collision, speaking with officers. Officers say he had no serious injuries.

The intersection is closed both eastbound and southbound, and will continue to be as officers continue their investigation. Police recommend drivers avoid the area.

UPDATE 2 p.m.

Police announced that the man injured subsequently died from his injuries:

“Information from witnesses to the collision indicate that the two vehicles collided in the intersection forcing one of the vehicles into a traffic signal pole,” an RBPD press release stated.  “The driver of that vehicle was ejected and subsequently died as a result of the injuries sustained in the collision. The driver of the other vehicle did not suffer any significant injuries. There were no occupants, other than the drivers, in either vehicle.”
The collision is being investigated by the Redondo Beach Police Department Traffic Division. Anyone that may have witnessed or has information about this collision is asked to contact Traffic Investigator William Turner at (310) 379-2477 Ext. 2721 or at bill.turner@redondo.org
