Bike Thief Caught

A suspect stole a bike from a home in South Hermosa last Saturday morning, but was apprehended when a witness followed the alleged thief and alerted police officers.

The witness saw the suspect take a bike from the patio of a home on the Strand south of the Hermosa Beach pier about 6:45 a.m., according to police reports. The witness followed the suspect north into Manhattan Beach, and alerted authorities there.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of petty theft, and remains in custody.

In-store theft

A woman is accused of stealing items while inside a store in South Hermosa last Tuesday, but took items belonging to customers, not the store itself.

The suspect entered a store in the 300 block of Hermosa Avenue about 2:45 p.m. Two other women, who did not know the suspect, came into the store about the same time, according to police reports. While the two women were being helped, the suspect picked up a purse belonging to one of the women, and carried it into the bathroom.

The suspect emerged from the bathroom with the victim’s purse apparently hidden inside her own, police said. The suspect fled the store in an unknown direction.

It was not immediately clear what the missing purse contained, but police are seeking the woman on suspicion of grand theft, meaning that the items were worth more than $950. ER
