Redondo Beach police arrested a man following a stolen vehicle pursuit early Tuesday morning.

Around 12:30 a.m. on March 8, police were called to the area of Catalina Avenue and Sapphire Street to investigate a disturbance call involving a pickup truck.

After identifying the truck in question, officers attempted to pull over the driver, who subsequently fled. RBPD pursued the driver to the area of Prospect Avenue and Avenue C, where the truck crashed. The driver then ditched the truck, hiding in the neighborhood.

Using a helicopter and K9 units, officers were able to set up containment, finding the suspect, 30 year old Randy Walker, of Torrance, in a backyard.

Walker was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, evading police, burglary and for having outstanding warrants for his arrest.

RBPD expanding Neighborhood Watch

RBPD is making a push to reignite local neighborhood watch programs.

The program, Officer Mike Diehr said, trains citizens on how to recognize suspicious criminal activity, as well as how to make sure their homes and neighborhoods are properly kept to reduce potential incidents.

The program is a valuable tool for both the police force and the community, giving citizens a pipeline to the police and allowing police to better understand their area’s needs.

Those interested in participating or forming a Neighborhood Watch group are asked to contact Officer Diehr at 310-379-2477, ext. 2493, or by email at mike.diehr@redondo.org.
