by Liz Mullen

A shooting, a break-in at the Apple Store in Manhattan Village, and a residential burglary were among the crimes Manhattan Beach Police responded to during the last week of the holiday season.

On New Year’s Day Manhattan Police were called to the 1400 block of 11th Street at 1:23 a.m., and found a man who had been shot lying in the street. The man, whom police have not identified, was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and was in critical condition.

“This is not believed to be a random attack, although many of the circumstances remain unknown,” MBPD said, in a press release.

Anyone with any information about the incident is urged to call MBPD Detective Seth Hartnell at (310) 802-5127.

On Dec. 21 at about 3 a.m., MBPD officers discovered a smashed window at the west entrance to Manhattan Village Mall, and a smashed front door to the Apple Store. Numerous Iphones on the display tables were stolen. The Gardena Police Department assisted MBPD in arresting one suspect. The investigation is ongoing.

On Dec. 27, a man threatened employees with a handgun at Macy’s in the Manhattan Village Mall before taking gold jewelry from several display cases. The man fled on foot through the north exit. An investigation is ongoing.

In a third commercial burglary incident, an unnamed business in Manhattan Beach had its front window smashed and a desk ransacked some time between Dec. 21 and Dec. 22. The investigation in this case is also ongoing.

Additionally, the MBPD is investigating a residential burglary that took place sometime between Dec. 23 and Dec. 27. A package and a vehicle were stolen from the home’s garage.

The MBPD took 45 crime reports for the week of Dec. 21 through Dec. 27. Vehicle burglaries, which had been on the rise earlier in the month, were down. Only three vehicle burglaries were reported for the week of Dec. 21 through Dec. 27, compared with 15 vehicle burglaries the week prior.

Smash and grab in Hermosa

On Saturday, December 30, a citizen witnessed a man smash a window of a local bike shop and leave with a high-end bicycle. The citizen called the HBPD, which arrived within one minute of the call.

After interviewing the witness, officers conducted a search and found the suspect on the bike near Pacific Coast Highway and Artesia Blvd. After a short chase, the suspect was arrested and the bicycle returned to the bike shop.

Redondo responds to high surf

During the last week of 2023, the RBPD and Redondo Beach Fire Department temporarily closed the lower bike path from Avenue C to Torrance Beach due to sand and debris from the high surf. Yacht Club Way, leading out to the King Harbor Yacht Club was also closed due to the high surf conditions.

The Redondo Beach Police Department reported six residential burglaries between Dec. 4 through Dec. 17. The police also responded to three robbery reports, three residential burglary reports, and five auto thefts. ER
