Police offer free gun locks while council contemplates gun safety

by Dan Blackburn

Gun owners, as well as those who are planning to purchase their guns from an authorized gun store, can avail themselves of free, cable-style gun locks provided by the Hermosa Beach Police Department, Police Chief Paul LeBaron has announced. The locks would help gun owners to comply with a potential ordinance now under consideration by the City Council.

The council has scheduled a public hearing May 13 on the proposed ordinance, which would, according to a city press release, require firearm owners to store firearms in residences in a locked container, or disable their firearms with a gun lock.”

The department has a long-running partnership with Project ChildSafe, which promotes gun education and safety.

“Gun accidents are a leading cause of injury and death to children, and these accidents are preventable by using the gun locks or storing handguns, rifles and shotguns in locked safes or cabinets,” said LeBaron.

“We encourage owners of firearms to store and use them responsibly to protect themselves, their loved ones and the community.”

The Hermosa Beach police station is located at 540 Pier Avenue. ER
