
A wave of 3,000 red, white and blue runners is expected for the 22nd running of the Village Runner 4th of July 5K Run/Community Walk on Saturday, July 4. .
Presented by UCLA Health, the race includes chip timing and begins at 8 a.m. in front of Village Runner at 1811-A Catalina Ave. The in-and-out course is flat and fast with ocean views and cool breezes.
Top male and female runners earn cash prizes for first ($200), second ($125) and third ($75). Awards will be given to age division winners. All participants receive a 4th of July Run T-shirt.
Clif Bar and Land Rover return as sponsors. Clif Bar will provide energy gel shots at the start of the race and at the turnaround point.
A patriotic outfit costume contest will be held prior to the race and a face-painting booth will be available for kids. Following the race at approximately 9:30 a.m., the popular Firecracker Dash will be held for kids ages 4-12.
David Cardona, of Torrance, is looking for a three-peat after winning last year’s race with a time of 15 minutes, eight seconds. Redondo Beach’s D’Ann Arthur is the defending women’s champion posting a time of 16:43 in 2014.
A Health and Fitness Expo will be held July 3-4 and a post-race party will be held at Rock & Brews, which is within walking distance of the finish line.
Proceeds benefit local after-school programs along with South Bay high school cross country and track & field programs.
