Redondo’s Chloe Curtis races to two CIF titles

Chloe Curtis captured her second straight CIF title in the 1,600 and added one in the 800 leading Redondo to a 4th place team finish in the Division II championships Saturday at Cerritos College.

Curtis continues to demonstrate why she is one of the top female high school runners in the United States. The senior’s CIF Southern Section winning time of 4:50.43 in the 1,600 moved her up into the fifth spot of the fastest times in the nation this year.

Sea Hawk teammate Lyndsey Mull finished second in the 1,600 with this year’s 20th fastest time in the nation at 4:52.62.

Curtis won the 800 with a time of 2:11.20 and holds the third fastest time in the nation, posting a 2:09.7 mark at the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions earlier this season. She also has the nation’s 14th fastest time in the 3,200 at 10:31.24.

Curtis and Mull will join the boys 1,600 relay team of Simon Schermerhorn, Remington Besnoin, Christian Bassman and Brandon Boyd in representing Redondo at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet tomorrow at Cerritos College. Qualifiers will advance to the CIF State Championships June 4-5 at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Mira Costa distance runners Aryn Foland and Savannah Pio turned in strong performances in the 3,200 to give the Mustangs an 11th place finish in Division II. Foland captured the CIF title with a time of 10:34.16, the 17th fastest in the nation this year. Pio will join Foland at the Masters Meet after placing third at 10:47.53.

Other local athletes advancing to the Masters Meet include El Segundo’s Allison Reaser, who took first in the Division 3 300 hurdles (43.04) and qualified in the 100 hurdles (14.20) and long jump (18’ 5 ?”).

Bay League competitors Rebecca Mehra, of Palos Verdes, won the Division 3 1,600 (4:56.92) and West Torrance’s Kayla Mallet captured first place in the Division 3 triple jump (38’ 11”).

In Division 2, North Torrance field star Jasmine Burrell qualified with second place finishes in the shot put (43’ ?”) and the discus (134’ 6”).

Boys Golf
Mira Costa’s Ryann Ree shot a 75 in the CIF Southern Sectional Individual Championships at La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc, advancing to the CIF/Southern California Golf Association Tournament to be held Thursday, June 3 in Temecula.

Badminton
Mira Costa’s badminton team completed its best season, upsetting second-seeded Garden Grove 11-10 in the CIF quarterfinals.

The Mustangs advanced but fell to top-seeded Mark Keppel High School 14-7 despite strong performances by team members Isabel Zhong, Allen Hsu, Erin Soh, Gina Alfandry (who won the final point against Garden Grove), Jeremy Soh, Yuan Wang, Chad Naramore, Erin Yokote, Jagriti Agrawal, Conner Colt, David Copeland and Greg Schnack.

Badminton team play is the best of 21 matches and each match is the best of 2-of-3 games.
