Redondo players, coach honored for success on the basketball court

After leading Redondo Union’s boys basketball team to its first state championship in school history, guards Derek Biale and Ian Fox were named All-CIF Division 2A Co-Players of the Year and Reggie Morris Jr., in his first year at the helm of the Redondo program, was selected as Coach of the Year.

Biale averaged 13 points and 2.6 assists per game and connnected on 90 3-pointers.

Fox averaged 15.4 points, 2.3 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

The Sea Hawks (28-8) finished the season with a 21-game winning streak while capturing CIF Division, Southern California and State championships.

Other Bay League players earning All-CIF honors were Mira Costa’s Cole Feaster (Div. 2AA) and Leuzinger’s Eric Childress (Div. 3AA).

Lawndale’s Will Newman made the Division 2AA team and in Division 4AA, Bishop Montgomery’s Lamond Murray Jr. joined Serra teammates Traveon Dawson and Ajon Efferson as honorees.

In girls basketball, Redondo senior Inara Nyingifa was selected CIF Division 2A Co-Player of the Year with Karen Wolf of Murrieta Valley. Sea Hawk teammate Taylor Smith also made the All-CIF squad.

Nyingifa was the Bay League’s Most Outstanding Player averaging 18.8 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game during the season.

Nyingifa helped lead Redondo to the CIF Southern Section Division 2A semifinals where the Sea Hawks lost a 60-56 heartbreaker in overtime to eventual champion Murrieta Valley.

Serra standouts Sierra Thompson, Deandrea Toler and Caila Hailey were named to the Division 4AA team after leading the Cavaliers to the CIF championship game.

In girls soccer, Mira Costa senior midfielder Melina Cohen and Redondo junior midfielder Shannon Simon were named to the All-CIF Division 2 team.

In Division 4, South Torrance teammates Jessica Nakae and Amanda Whittle joined Torrance’s Kaitlyn Johnson on the All-CIF squad. Vistamar senior goalkeeper Tyler Shelby was named to the Division 7 team.

Palos Verdes had two players from its Bay League champion boys soccer squad named to the All-CIF Division 1 team. Charlie Keating and Kevin Vondruk joined West Torrance’s Joseph Barakat on the squad.

In Division 4, South Torrance teammates Ryosuke Inaba, Richie Lee and Matt Michell were honored while Vistamar’s Marlon Gonzalez and Tyler Salem were named to the Division 7 team.

In girls water polo, Mira Costa’s Jordan Raney joined Bay League foes Carley Radov, Ellie D’Ambra and Kate Roan of Palos Verdes on the All-CIF Division 3 team.
