Summer ‘yarnbomb,’ opera, come to Franklin Park

Yarnbomb Redondo will return for its second year to Franklin Park on Sunday, July 1. The  yarnbomb, a temporary installation of yarn and craft art, was founded last year by resident Lesley Elwood. The installation activates the neighborhood gathering space with an evolving and participatory art installation created with yarn.
Members of the community, with assistance from artists, will yarnbomb signposts and trees throughout the park. All ages and craft experience levels are welcome to participate.
Yarnbomb Redondo will host a number of community gatherings throughout the summer in support of the art installation. The public is invited to kick off the project with individual yarnbombing creations on Sunday, July 1, from noon to 4 p.m.  On Saturday, July 14, from noon to 4 p.m., a free community crochet and knitting workshop will be held. Both events will be at Franklin Park.
Amid the yarn bomb installation, Opera on Tap Los Angeles will perform in Franklin Park on Thursday, July 26 at 6:15 pm.
OOTLA, a group of classical singers that performs in non-classical settings to “bring opera back to the people,” celebrates the things about opera that coincide with summer. All are invited to sing along, and families are encouraged to bring a blanket and low chairs to picnic during an evening of great music, though Redondo officials stress that all park rules must be followed at all times.
Franklin Park is at 807 S. Inglewood Ave. For more information, visit Redondo.org/publicart or contact the Cultural Arts Division at 310-318-0644.

Sportfishing Pier planning meeting on July 9

The City of Redondo Beach will hold the third in a series of Sportfishing Pier planning meetings on Monday, July 9, at 6:30 p.m. during the regular meeting of the city’s Harbor Commission.
Past meetings have discussed proposed uses and design features for the newest iteration of the pier, which will replace the timber pier that has been closed since winter, due to structural concerns.
Redondo Public Works staff is encouraging interested parties to complete an online survey to rank proposed uses. The survey can be found at bit.ly/Sportfishingpiersurvey1. The survey will be open through midnight of Sunday, July 1.
