Traditional Hawaiian sailing vessel visits King Harbor

The Hawaiian sailing vessel Hikianalia will sail into King Harbor on Wednesday, Oct. 17, for a 4 p.m. traditional arrival and native peoples’ welcoming ceremony.

Hikianalia recently sailed from Hawaii to San Francisco two weeks ago, navigating the journey using traditional methods, without modern instruments.

Hikianalia is used as a floating classroom, specializing in scientific exploration of marine resources and conservation, teaching care for the ocean and modeling sustainable practices. The 72 foot canoe also contains solar-powered electric motors, powered by onboard panels, that convert sunlight to electric propulsive energy.

The canoe will be docked at King Harbor Yacht Club from Oct. 18 to Oct. 22. Canoe tours are free and open to the public.
