RBEF to hold “rock’n” gala on Saturday

The Rock’n RBEF Gala, benefitting the Redondo Beach Educational Foundation — and by extension, the Redondo Beach Unified School District — takes place this Saturday, April 27, starting at 6 p.m. at the Portofino Hotel.

Attendees to the ticketed event will have access to a two-hour cocktail reception, wine, and beer tasting, hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner, a live concert by Identity Theft, and open seating throughout the event.

The annual gala is as much a celebration for the school district and its teachers as it is a fundraiser for RBEF. Last year, the foundation raised more than $1 million in donations to support and supplement RBUSD classes, programs, and activities.

Organizers warn that parking will be scarce this year, owing to events in and around King Harbor, so attendees are encouraged to find alternate modes of transportation, rather than drive themselves.

Tickets cost $150 per person. For more information, visit rbef.org/spring-gala.

Not your usual suspects: RBPD holding follow-up surf contest

The Redondo Beach Police Department is sponsoring its second annual “The Line Up” surf contest on Saturday, May 4, at Burnout, the surf spot just off of Esplanade and Vista Del Mar.

The contest is based on a surf team competition format designed to include all levels of surfers, from first timers to professionals. The event will also benefit the Special Olympics, Wounded Heroes of America and the Redondo Beach Police Foundation. The event is designed to promote safety while building a relationship between locals and RBPD.

Registered participants will receive a free T-shirt and lunch. Prizes will be awarded, and time will be set aside for free surfing alongside the friendly competition and awards, including the coveted “Golden Donut” trophy.

Space is limited and registration closes on May 1st. For more information visit redondo.org/surfcontest website or contact Dinah Lary at 310-379-2477 x2852.
