Redondo Police sponsoring surf contest
The Redondo Beach Police Department will hold “The Line Up,” its first annual surf contest on Saturday, May 5. The contest will be based around the surf team format, and is open to all levels of experience, from first-timers to shredders. Teams will consist of five-member groups of pros, newbies, and every skill-level in-between.
A sixth member will then be assigned to each, of either a Wounded Hero of America veteran, a Special Olympic athlete, or a Redondo Beach Police Officer.
The event is free, with a suggested donation to one of three charities: The Redondo Beach Police Foundation, which issues training, equipment and program grants to the Redondo Beach Police Department; the Wounded Heroes of America, which offers assistance and camaraderie to combat-wounded military veterans; and the Special Olympics of Southern California, which works toward sport training, acceptance and inclusion for those with intellectual disabilities.
The contest begins at 7 a.m., between Avenue I and Burnout. For more information on the contest, visit redondo.org/police, or contact Dinah Lary at 310-379-2477, ext. 2852.
Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 28
Redondo Beach will take part in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back campaign on Saturday, April 28, at the Redondo Beach Police Department Annex, 200 N. Pacific Coast Highway, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The program is free and anonymous. The drop-off site will accept unused, unwanted or expired prescription or over-the-counter drugs, and substances do not need to be in their original container.
However, illicit substances such as methamphetamine, cocaine, and cannabis will not be accepted as part of the program. Needles and sharps will also be turned away.
A 2015 survey by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health found that approximately 74,000 people within the South Bay Service Planning Area had misused prescription drugs in 2014.
