Rotary Award
Nia Vidal, a senior at Redondo Union High School, was chosen for this year’s first Redondo Beach Rotary Award. Vidal is extremely involved at the high school. When she was a freshman, she began her endeavors as a student council member. She is currently the Associated Student Body President and also served as the school’s junior and sophomore class president. She is a high academic achiever as well, with a GPA of 3.6 and a weighted GPA of 3.9. After high school, Vidal plans to study medicine and become a dentist or orthodontist. She is applying to Stanford, Pepperdine, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD or USF. She also plays the piano, loves reading classical literature, dances and plays golf and tennis. Vidal has received many awards for her involvement and academic achievements and also dedicates her time to raising awareness and money for numerous causes off-campus.
BINGO caller needed
The Perry Park Senior Club urgently needs to find a Volunteer Bingo Caller To volunteer, call LuAnn Willoughby at 310 376-7217.Callers would be needed on Monday and Friday from 1-5 p.m. They must be able to see, hear and be able to operate the bingo machine. Adults of all ages are encouraged to apply.
Novel Fever
National Novel Writing Month will be celebrated at the RB main library to encourage people to tackle the challenge of writing a novel on Nov. 12 from 9 a.m- 4 p.m. Come prepared to write on your own computer or by hand. A volunteer from NaNoWriMo (www.nanowrimo.org) will be at the library to inspire participants with writing games, a pep talk and a demonstration of a web-based writing tool to help transform novel writing into an achievable and fun endeavor. This is a free program and will be held in the 2nd floor meeting room at 303 N. PCH.
Veterans Picnic
Redondo Beach will observe Veterans Day at the new Veterans Memorial in Veterans Park at the beach at 1 p.m. on Nov. 11. The solemn observance will include reflection and remembrance, music, commentary and honors to all those members of the military who have served their country. Keynote speaker will be the Captain of the port of L.A. Capt. Roger R. Laferriere, United States Coast Guard. Other participants will include local elected officials and military dignitaries. The service will be followed by a BBQ picnic sponsored by the Redondo Elks. The BBQ is free to all veterans and members of the military. A $5 donation is recommended from all others.
