One person is dead and another injured after a bus collided with a pair of pedestrians in Redondo Beach’s Riviera Village Wednesday evening.

According to Redondo Beach Police Department Sgt. Shawn Freeman, an elderly couple was crossing Avenue I at about 6:15 p.m. when they were struck by a Los Angeles Department of Transportation commuter bus turning eastbound from Catalina Avenue to Avenue I.

Both were trapped under the bus when RBFD arrived on the scene. The man was considered dead at the scene. The woman, who police said is 70 years old, was transported to Harbor General Hospital, and was described as responsive. Police have not identified the man yet, nor released the woman’s name. The LA Coroner’s Office will assist in identifying the man.

Police said the exact cause of the accident is not yet known; investigators will need to
determine if the pedestrians were in the crosswalk prior to the bus entering the
crosswalk, of if the pedestrians walked in front of the bus. DUI is not suspected in
this investigation.
