Ted Semann was named the city’s newest department head in a release issued by City Manager Joe Hoefgen on Oct. 23. Seamaan was the top pick from a field of 70 applicants.

“Ted stood out among the group having lead multi-departmental teams overseeing complex community projects such as the Torrance Transit Center, major roadway improvements, right of way acquisitions, development of oversized vehicle ordinance, traffic calming projects and the like,” Hoefgen said. He went on to state that Seamaan is “highly respected” throughout the South Bay and among numerous outside agencies.

Seamaan has spent the past 18 years working in the City of Torrance, most recently as Engineering Manager in the Public Works Department’s Major Projects division. He has also worked for the City of Lynwood and in the private sector.

“I truly have had a wonderful experience with the City of Torrance, and look forward to the challenge of serving as Public Works Director in the City of Redondo Beach,” Seamaan said. “From a Public Works Director’s perspective, Redondo Beach has a lot to offer — significant infrastructure upgrades, an engaged and supportive community, and a capable and well-trained staff. I’m thrilled to join the Redondo Beach team.”

Seamaan will begin work on Nov. 16, overlapping with current interim director Tim Shea, who will retire in December after 27 years of working for Redondo’s Public Works Department.
