One person is confirmed dead and up to 12 were injured in Redondo Beach Wednesday night after a car ran a red light, hitting pedestrians leaving a Christmas recital Wednesday night.
Families were leaving a performance by students of St. James Catholic school just after 8 p.m. when, according to police, a northbound white car drove through a red light on Pacific Coast Highway at Vincent Street and collided with the pedestrians. Police said the driver then collided with another vehicle head-on.
Preliminary reports from the Redondo Beach Police Department said that at least one child was among the injured.
“It was horrible,” said bystander Mark Zanno.
Zanno was on the scene, in the passenger seat of a car facing southbound on Pacific Coast Highway when the pedestrians were struck. He hopped out to help the injured pedestrians.
“I was with a little girl who must have landed three cars back. She just had a hurt leg, but her dad was bleeding out of the side of his head. She was just beside herself.”
According to RBPD, several of the victims transported to hospitals appeared to be in critical condition. The driver, currently in police custody, has not been identified. Police said she is being evaluated for driving under the influence.
