Redondo Beach Police Department holds public safety fair

Public safety officers invited the public into their world on Sunday afternoon.

The space in front of the Civic Center, Redondo Beach Library, and Redondo Beach Police Department was scattered with informational booths and intriguing displays: police cars, fire engines, armored trucks, special weapons. This was the city’s 18th annual public safety fair.

Kids hopped onto police four-wheelers, posed with firefighters, and got personal handcuff tutorials from Police Chief Joe Leonardi.

Members of the public were able to take tours of the police department and its jail cell; gather information about emergency response work being undertaken in Redondo Beach; mix and mingle with uniformed officers; obtain free gun locks and children’s identity kids; and learn about SWAT.

Boy Scouts served up hot dogs from beneath the shade of an umbrella; a DJ pumped music into the summery air; and kids jumped in a bounce house despite the heat.

Below are photos of the fair, which was last week advertised on signage posted at major intersections in Redondo Beach and which necessitated the partial closure of Diamond St.
