Redondo Beach residents will now be able to receive up-to-the-minute alerts from the Police Department via a free text messaging and email service.
At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, Police Chief Joe Leonardi announced the rollout of Nixle, which he described as a “mass notification program that will allow us to tell people throughout the city what is important to them in their neighborhood and city.”
Registering for the service is free, and enables users to receive real-time information about emergencies, crime, public safety, missing persons, traffic, road closures, and extreme weather. Subscribers are able to specify which kinds of alerts they wish to receive and which they do not.
Last year, the Redondo Beach Community Emergency Response Team used the Nixle service to recruit volunteers for cleaning up dead fish in King Harbor.
The City Council previously voted to engage Nixle at a cost of just over $10,000.
As an aside, Leonardi clarified that Monday night’s Amber Alert was disseminated by the California Highway Patrol and was unrelated to the local rollout of Nixle.
To receive Nixle alerts, text your ZIP code to 888-777 or visit www.nixle.com.
