Redondo boys basketball team to compete in Open Division

Bay League champion Redondo is one of three South Bay teams selected to compete in the CIF-Southern Section Open Division tournament and will play a home game in the first round on Friday.

Redondo (22-4) hosts Roosevelt (21-6) who shared the Big VIII League title with Centennial/Corona. All playoff games with the exception of the final round are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.

The Sea Hawks are coming off an  impressive performance at the inaugural Jordan Brand Invitational held in Toronto, Canada where Ryse Williams’ 21 points led Redondo to a 97-72 victory over perennial power Father Henry Carr of Toronto.

Leland Green added 19 points, Cameron Williams had 17 points, Morgan Means scored 16 points and Elijah Nesbit recorded 14 assists for Redondo.

Chino Hills (27-0) is MaxPreps’ top-ranked team in the nation and the top seed in the Open Division. Bishop Montgomery (24-1) is seeded second and was edged by Chino Hills 71-67 on Jan. 20. Sierra Canyon (22-3) is seeded third and Mater Dei (25-3) is the fourth seed.

If Redondo wins on Friday, the Sea Hawks will face the Sierra Canyon-Los Alamitos winner in the second round on Tuesday.

Bay League runner-up Inglewood (20-6) is also competing in the Open Division and will travel to take on Mission League champion Alemany (21-6) on Friday.

All Open Division teams receive an automatic berth into the CIF State tournament.

Also representing the Bay League in the postseason will be Peninsula (14-12) who earned an at-large berth and travels to Empire League champion Cypress (19-9) for a Division 1A first-round game on Wednesday. The winner will face the Vista Murrieta-Poly/Riverside winner on Friday.

In Division 2AA, Mira Costa (16-11) hosts Santa Fe (13-11) in the first round on Wednesday. The winner advances to play the Loyola-Loara winner on Friday.

Mira Costa is ranked No. 12 in the division and has multiple threats on the court including its top player, Quenton Jackson who has returned from a wrist injury. Johnny Mims leads the Mustangs in total points (239) and assists (93), Tyler Morgan is the team’s leading rebounder with 100 and coach Jeff Amaral’s squad is supported by Bobby Barkley and Brandon Chan.

In Division 2A, Pioneer League champion Torrance (17-9) hosts Lawndale (13-13)  on Wednesday with the winner taking on the Temple City-Simi Valley victor on Friday.

Pioneer League runner-up North Torrance (15-11) plays at San Marcos (19-7) and West Torrance (10-16) travels to Pasadena (18-8) in the first round.

In Division 3A, Leuzinger (15-11) plays at Rosemead on Wednesday while the Division 4AA fourth seed Serra (11-14) hosts Desert Hot Springs (third place, De Anza League) on Wednesday.

In Division 4AA, El Segundo (13-13) earned an at-large berth out of the Ocean League and plays at Miramonte League champion Pomona.

In Division 4A, Morningside (14-11, Bay League at-large) travels to Frontier League champion Malibu and in Division 5AA, Chadwick (11-13, second place in the Prep League) hosts Desert and Vistamar (15-8, third place in the Coastal League) plays at St. Margaret’s.
