
Redondo’s boys volleyball faces stiff competition this week with two key Bay League matches before the Sea Hawks host their annual Varsity Classic Tournament at three local venues.
The 32-team tournament includes nine teams ranked in the top ten in their respective CIF Southern Section divisions. Competition also features San Diego powers La Costa Canyon, Carlsbad, Scripps Ranch and La Jolla.
Matches are two-out-of-three games to 25 points, third game to 15 points with no cap.
Dana Hills, the sixth-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 1, is the tournament’s top-seeded team followed by San Clemente (No. 7, Div. 1) Laguna Beach (No. 1, Div.2), Westake (No. 8, Div. 1), Burroughs (No 2, Div. 2), Oak Park (No. 3, Div. 2), Valencia (No. 4, Div. 2), Palos Verdes, El Segundo (No. 1, Div. 3) and La Costa Canyon.
Pool play begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 1. Competition at Redondo Union High School features Pool 1 (San Clemente, Campolinda, Peninsula, Calabasas), Pool 2 (Westlake, Redondo, Santa Monica, team to be announced), Pool 3 (Laguna Beach, Carlsbad, Dos Pueblos,Oaks Christian ) and Pool 4 (Valencia, La Costa Canyon, Rio Mesa, Bishop Amat).
Playing at West Torrance High School.will be Pool 5 (Burroughs, Long Beach Poly, Scripps Ranch, West Torrance) and Pool 6 (Palos Verdes, El Segundo, La Jolla, Oxnard).
South Torrance High School hosts Pool 7 (Dana Hills, Capistrano Valley, Torrance, Eastlake) and Pool 8 (Oak Park, Saddleback Valley Christian, South Torrance, Alemany).
Saturday’s action begins at 8:30 a.m. First and second place teams compete in the Gold Division at Redondo. Third place teams play in the Silver Division at South and fourth place team battle in the Bronze Division at West.
In Bay League competition, Redondo hosts Peninsula Tuesday and will travel to take on a tough Palos Verdes squad on Thursday with playoff implications on the line. The Sea Hawks conclude the regular season at league-leading Mira Costa in a 7 p.m. rivalry match on Tuesday, May 5.
