Sarah Fry and Sierra Malmberg, two young women from Redondo Beach, are among 51 recipients of the 2022 Brooke Owens Fellowships, a national non-profit recognizing undergraduate females with internships in space and aviation.

More than 1,000 students applied for this year’s program.

Recipients will work summer internships at firms around the country, and gather in Washington, D.C., July 13-17 for the annual Brooke Owens Summit.

Fry is a sophomore at Princeton studying mechanical and aerospace engineering. Her internship is set for ABL Space Systems in El Segundo. Malmberg, an Arizona State junior studying mechanical engineering, will work at SpaceX at Starbase, Tex.

Fry graduated from Marymount High School in Los Angeles. Malmberg was home-schooled after attending Riviera Hall Lutheran until third grade.

The Owens Fellowships began in 2016, in honor of late pilot D. Brooke Owens, a former employee at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and the White House Office of Management and Budget. She died of cancer at age 35.
