A community garden for Alta Vista Park was approved by the Redondo Beach City Council Tuesday night, on a 4 – 1 vote.
The 4,000-square foot space will be managed by the South Bay Parkland Conservancy (SBPC), with 26 beds to rent for $100 per year on a first-come, first-served basis, so everyone in the community that desire to have a garden can participate, even if they don’t know that much about gardening, they can also go to sites like homegardenscare.com to learn how.
Councilmember Laura Emdee voted “no” because of aesthetic concerns over sign clutter.
“I’m not against the community garden,” she said.
City work needed at the site includes a water hookup and a curb-cut for ADA-access.
“We will now begin fundraising in earnest,” said SBPC President Jim Light.
The group hopes to raise $50,000. A $5,000 grant has been approved by the Beach Cities Health District.
Gardeners will be limited to two consecutive years for a plot.
“We want turnover,” said Light.
SBPC aims to open the garden by this fall. ER
