Redondo girls continue to rule the court

With the first round of Bay League competition complete, Redondo’s girls basketball team controls its own destiny having swept through the league while moving into the No. 12 spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA rankings.

The Lady Sea Hawks defeated Leuzinger 55-32 Tuesday behind Inara Nyingifa’s 10 points. The win came after Redondo (14-8, 5-0) handed Palos Verdes its first league loss with a 57-35 home win last Friday.

Coach Marcelo Enriquez’s Redondo squad used a tenacious defense and balanced attack with nine of its 11 players scoring. The Sea Hawk defense did not allow a single point in the second quarter while Rachel Scarlett led the offensive attack with 14 points including four 3-pointers.

Annie Park had 11 points and six assists, Ashiana Antar added 10 points and Riki Murakami contributed five points and five steals for Redondo.  

Sandwiched between 6 p.m. league home games against Peninsula tomorrow and Mira Costa on Tuesday, Redondo will travel to play Bishop Amat (No. 2 in Division 3A) in a non-league contest Saturday at 6 p.m.

Defending league champion Mira Costa (14-8, 4-1) remained on Redondo’s heels with a 46-42 victory at Palos Verdes (13-9, 3-2) on Tuesday. Kylie Nakamine recorded 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Mustangs, who host West Friday at 6 p.m. before facing rival Redondo on Tuesday.

In boys action, both Mira Costa and Redondo finished the first round of league play with 2-3 records. Mira Costa knocked off Palos Verdes 58-43 Tuesday behind Elliott Ozer’s 30-point performance. He also grabbed nine rebounds and had four assists and Thomas Johnson recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs.

Coach Henry Myar’s team fell short of handing Peninsula its first blemish in league play, losing to the Panthers 47-43 last Friday.

Mira Costa (9-12, 2-3) hosts West (10-10, 2-3) Friday before playing at Redondo on Tuesday. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.

Redondo (11-10, 2-3) comes off a 57-49 loss at Leuzinger (14-7, 3-2). Jacquise Bates scored 11 points, Brandon Boyd recorded 10 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Martyre Demarco added 10 points for the Sea Hawks who will host undefeated Peninsula (20-1, 5-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. Peninsula is ranked No. 1 in Division 2A.

Boys Soccer

Mira Costa (10-2-3, 3-1-1) ended Palos Verdes’ 13-game winning streak with a 1-0 road victory on Tuesday, moving the Mustangs into a tie for first place with the Sea Kings (15-3-3, 3-1-1). Shane Sisson’s controversial deflection in the 77th minute resulted in the game’s only goal.

The Mustangs tied Peninsula last Friday when Jess Chamberlain scored in the final minute to even the score 2-2. Mira Costa begins the second round of league action hosting West in a 6 p.m. match Friday. The Mustangs travel to Redondo Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest.

The Sea Hawks fell to Palos Verdes 3-0 last Friday, marking the 12th shutout of the season for Palos Verdes.

Girls Soccer 

Mira Costa (12-4-2, 3-2) dropped a hard fought game with league leading Palos Verdes (17-2-2, 5-0) on Tuesday. The 2-0 loss was the second straight setback for the Mustangs who suffered their first league loss with a 2-0 defeat by visiting Peninsula last Friday.

Mira Costa will look to regroup when it plays at West Friday at 7 p.m. before hosting Redondo in a 3 p.m. match on Tuesday.

Redondo (7-7-3, 1-3-1) won its first league game with a 10-1 victory over Leuzinger on Tuesday. Shannon Simon scored three goals and Samantha Witteman added two to pace the Sea Hawks. Katie Teshima, Jennifer Stevens, Patricia Gonzalez, Brina Moreno and Tonya Gonzalez also scored for Redondo.
