Redondo’s girls volleyball team had little time to dwell on its heartbreaking loss to rival Mira Costa last week as the Sea Hawks face two Bay League opponents before hosting the 32-team Redondo Power Classic Friday and Saturday.
After hosting Peninsula Tuesday evening, the Sea Hawks travel to Palos Verdes Thursday for a critical 6 p.m. match. Redondo must defeat the teams from the hill and West next Tuesday if the Sea Hawks want to have any chance of sharing a league title which would be made possible with a victory over the host Mustangs on Thursday, Nov. 4.
With 17 teams ranked in their respective divisions, the Power Classic will provide a strong field of contenders who will attempt to dethrone defending champion Redondo. The Sea Hawks have captured the tournament title four of the last eight years.
Redondo is ranked sixth in the CIF Division 1-AA poll and is seeded second in the tournament behind Long Beach Poly, the division’s second-ranked team that is listed as No. 19 in the Prepvolleyball.com Century Club National Rankings.
Rounding out the top eight seeds are Orange Lutheran, San Clemente, Vista Murrieta, Notre Dame Academy, La Canada and Centennial/Bakersfield.
Matches will be played at Redondo, Bishop Montgomery, West and South with pool play beginning Friday at 3:30 p.m. Action continues at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with the championship to be held at Redondo at approximately 3 p.m.
After placing fifth in the highly-competitive California Challenge in Torrey Pines, Mira Costa will hone its game at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday.
Mira Costa is ranked fourth in CIF Division 1-AA and, after a non-league match against visiting Laguna Beach (No. 5 in Division 2-AA) on Tuesday, hosts West Thursday at 5:15 p.m. The Mustangs travel to Peninsula Tuesday for a 4:15 p.m. match before hosting rival Redondo in the Bay League finale.
