
Top-seeded Redondo rallied from a first-set loss to defeat host Long Beach Wilson in a CIF-SS Division 1AA quarterfinal match Saturday night.
Coach Tommy Chaffins’ squad rallied for a 22-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-23 victory after dropping the first game and trailing 16-7 in the second.
Yaasmeen Bedart-Ghani has 21 kills to lead the Sea Hawks who will host Great Oak in a semifinal match slated to start at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Redondo (33-2) seeks revenge after the second-seeded Sea Hawks were upset in four sets at Great Oak in last season’s CIF quarterfinals.
Great Oak (21-5) upset fourth-seeded Marymount 20-25, 25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 16-14 Saturday to earn a rematch with Redondo. The winner of Tuesday’s match will face the winner of the Mater Dei-Corona del Mar contest in the finals to be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at Cerritos College.
Corona del Mar (24-5) upset second-seeded Lakewood in five sets while third-seeded Mater Dei (27-10) eliminated Mira Costa.
Mira Costa (28-7) did not go down without a fight in its 25-13, 18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-13 loss. The Mustangs battled back from a 23-16 deficit to make a close third set and won the fourth set after trailing 19-15.
Katie Rethmeyer led Mira Costa with 19 kills. Skylar Caputo added 13 kills and Erin Sagisi recorded 11 kills.
In Division 2AA, second-seeded South Torrance (23-9) defeated visiting Arroyo Grande 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-12, 15-10 and will host Esperanza (22-11) in the semifinals. The winner will meet the Village Christian-Brea Olinda winner for the championship at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cerritos College.
Fourth-seeded Brea Olinda defeated visiting North Torrance despite Sabryn Roberts’ 26 kill and 25 dig performance for the Saxons who finished the season with a 26-7 record.
