With the regular season in its final week, Mira Costa’s and Redondo’s baseball teams are battling for position to gain an edge in the upcoming CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Entering the week, the Mustang and Sea Hawk baseball squads were tied for first place with 6-0 records and are looking to their home-and-away series next week when Mira Costa hosts the first game on Tuesday and Redondo is home for the final contest of the regular season on Thursday, May 10.

With a young squad, Redondo is optimistic and continues to improve. The team played at Palos Verdes Wednesday and will host the Sea Kings Friday in a 6 p.m. contest.

“We are playing well, and looking forward to the next two league opponents in Palos Verdes and Mira Costa,” Redondo coach Andy Diver said. “We are excited to have already clinched a playoff spot, although our main goal is to win the Bay League.”

The Sea Hawks have been led by second baseman Cameron Wong who entered the week hitting .580.

“He is our leadoff hitter and spark plug, setting the table for our next two hitters Brett McCauley and Christian Dicochea,” Diver said. “McCauley and Dicochea are very explosive offensive players and can carry us offensively.”

Juniors Jake Thau and Drew Dalquist, along with senior relief pitcher Gabe Pech, are stalwarts on the mound.

“Jake and Drew have done fantastic jobs of getting better each week, competing and giving us quality starts,” Diver added. “If we play defense behind them and have competitive at bats, we will be okay. Gabe is a great option late in games, he is a senior and the moment is not too big for him. I anticipate the next two weeks of Bay League play to be competitive. Our goal each day is to play the “Game” the right way, and focus on winning the next pitch.”

Mira Costa is ranked No. 4 in the Division poll entering the week with an impressive 25-2 record, losing only to Gahr 4-3 in a non-league game and Torrance 4-1 in the Redondo Tournament.

The Mustangs defeated Santa Monica 4-0 and Lakewood 8-2 in the tournament and will face Long Beach Wilson Saturday at 11 a.m.

Following this week’s two games against Morningside, the Mustangs will prepare for their two-game series with Redondo.
