
Redondo and defending champion Torrey Pines tied for third place in the prestigious Durango Fall Classic girls volleyball tournament held Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas.
The 64-team tournament featured teams from eight states and included 12 CIF Southern Section top-ten teams. Redondo finished the highest among the six ranked teams from CIF-SS Division 1AA.
Redondo won its pool with sweeps over Edison (Huntington Beach), Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) and Faith Lutheran (Las Vegas, NV).
The Sea Hawks advance to the Championship Bracket after defeating Marymount 25-17, 25-10. Redondo defeated Kamehameha (Honolulu, HI) 25-18, 25-19 in the first round before falling to perennial powerhouse Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 26-24, 25-18 in the semifinals.
Assumption (Louisville, KY) defeated Archbishop Mitty 28-26, 25-18 in the championship match.
Kristen Hamlin led Redondo with 33 kills and also posted eight blocks on the day. Yaz Bedart-Ghani recorded 25 kills and eight blocks, Megan Rice contributed 24 kills and five blocks, Abril Bustamante added 19 kills and 23 digs and Katie Barkley had 36 digs. All-CIF setter Norene Iosia spread the ball around recording 74 assists.

Ranked No. 6 in CIF-SS Division 1AA, Mira Costa also reached the Championship Bracket finishing sixth overall.
The Mustangs won their pool with wins over Clovis West, Francis Parker (San Diego) and Foothill (Henderson, NV).
Mira Costa upset Santa Margarita (ranked No. 3 in Division 1AA) 25-23, 25-22 before falling to Torrey Pines 25-14, 25-18 in the first round of Championship Bracket play.
The Mustangs rebounded to beat Flintridge 22-25, 25-18, 25-20 before falling to Kamehameha 25-11, 25-15 in the fifth-place match.
South Torrance also represented the South Bay and finished 36th overall. The Spartans are ranked No. 4 in CIF-SS Division 2AA but finished third in their pool losing to La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) and Branson (Ross, CA) and defeating Bonanza (Las Vega, NV).
South reached the Classic Bracket with a 27-25, 21-25, 25-14 win over Buchanan (Clovis). The Spartans beat Harvard-Westlake 25-17, 25-23 before falling to eventual Classic Bracket champion Saddleback Valley Christian of San Juan Capistrano 25-17, 25-22.
South lost the third-place match to O’Gormon (Sioux Falls, SD) 25-23, 25-20.
Redondo begins its defense of the Bay League title Tuesday, Sept. 30 with a 5:30 p.m. road match at Palos Verdes.
Mira Costa plays three non-league matches before opening the Bay League season Thursday, Oct. 2 when Palos Verdes visits Fisher Gym.
The Mustangs travel to Notre Dame Academy (No. 7, Div. 2A) on Thursday, Sept 25, Los Alamitos (No. 9, Div. 1AA) on Friday, Sept. 26 and Marymount Tuesday, Sept. 30.
