Redondo loses 2nd-round game in Ryse Williams Pacific Shores tournament

The Redondo boys basketball team failed to hold onto leads before Bishop Montgomery scored 10 unanswered points to win a quarterfinal game in the Ryse Williams Pacific Shores Tournament.

Redondo was held to only eight points in the fourth quarter and Bishop Montgomery erupted for a 63-53 win despite losing point guard Gianni Hunt to an in injury in the first half. Hunt is not expected to return to action until after the tournament ends on Saturday.

Redondo (1-1) held a 31-27 lead at halftime before Bishop Montgomery (2-0) went ahead with a six-point run, but a 3-pointer by Mike Solimando put the Sea Hawks back in the led 34-33.

With the score tied at 45 entering the fourth quarter, Joshua Jasmer put Redondo by two but it was the final lead the Sea Hawks have the rest of the evening.

Trailing 53-47, Redondo’s Jayden Winfrey hit a 3-pointer to cut the Knight’s lead to 53-50 before Bishop Montgomery scored the game’s next 10 points to seal the victory.

Winfrey led the Sea Hawks with 13 points and Xan Wesley had 12.

“That’s the great thing about November tournaments,” said Redondo coach Ali Parvaz. “You get to play one of the top teams in the state and see where we measure up against them.”

In the opening game on Monday, Redondo defeated Birmingham 72-59 behind the sharpshooting Wesley who recorded 21 points.

Redondo will play Lynwood, a 78-46 loser to Washington Prep, Friday at 5 p.m.
