Redondo track and field heads into CIF meets on high note

Redondo’s track and field program is running on all cylinders as it begins its journey for CIF and State championships on Saturday after an impressive performance at the Bay League Finals last Friday.

Redondo’s boys captured their second straight Bay League team title with a 75-61 victory over Mira Costa before claiming 12 champions in the Bay League Finals.

Sea Hawk Coach Bob Leetch won his seventh consecutive girls league title with Redondo holding off rival Mira Costa for a 71-64 win.

After a stellar football season as a running back, Jerone Jackson didn’t miss a beat going from the gridiron to the track. The senior was a four-time Bay League champion winning the 200 with a time of 22.64 seconds, the 400 (49.09) and was a members of the Sea Hawk’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams who won with times of 43.39 and 3:24.38, respectively.

Redondo went 1-2-3 in the pole vault with Tate Curran claiming the title with a mark of 15 feet, 6 inches. The mark gives Curran the top seed heading the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Prelims to be held Saturday at Trabuco Hills High School. Divisional finals will be held Saturday, May 21 at Cerritos College.

Also winning league title for Redondo were Ethan Comeaux (1600, 4:14.81), Ryan Wadhams (800, 1:59.68) and Jaden Allen (long jump, 21-09.25).

Mira Costa’s boys swept the 300 hurdles and the 3200 events with Fabien Franck-Love winning the 300 hurdles (39.98) and Ethan Williams outdistancing his teammates in the 3200 with a time of 9:42.84.

Other Mustang champions included Brendan Hunt (triple jump, 42-02.50), Jonah Tavai (shot put, 48-05) and Justin Johnson (discus, 124-01).

In girls competition, Redondo’s Kennedy Williams captured the 100 (12.34) and 200 (25.52), Tairyn Montgomery led a Sea Hawk sweep in the shot put (38-03) and Taryn-Rose Gregorio won the discus (1000-01).

Mira Costa’s Shante Robinson was a four-time winner claiming victory in the 100 hurdles (15.44) and 300 hurdles (45.66) along with running on the Mustang’s 4×100 (48.51) and 4×400 (3:57.69) relay teams.

Also winning for Mira Costa were Jaylah Herron (400, 57.83), Melia Chittenden (3200, 10:57.80) and Alexa Faubert (high jump, 4-10).
