Redondo Union High School’s new Student Union, or cafeteria, marks another milestone in what Superintendent Steven Keller has called the high school’s “renaissance.”
Students, teachers, and community leaders gathered last week to watch Principal Nicole Wesley cut the ribbon at the official opening of the Student Union, which feels like it belongs in a university dormitory. The sleek, upscale dining area has a rooftop patio for seniors and can seat up to 500 people.
A team of students, assembled by junior Caleb Walker, designed the interior decoration.
At the opening ceremony, junior Sofia Colwell said the team spent “endless hours” trying to strike a balance between “sophisticated” and “cozy.”
“We were able to leave our own mark on the school by the time we graduated so that’s also really special,” Colwell said.
She said there is a “huge buzz on campus,” as the student body is “super excited” about its new cafeteria.
As the cafeteria will focus on serving healthy foods – on principle, there is no deep fryer in the kitchen – there was a smattering of nutritious fare available for sampling last Wednesday.
Celebrity chef Devin Alexander, host of a FitTV show and author of eight cookbooks, put on a live cooking demonstration at the opening.
Funding for the Student Union was made possible by Measure C, a bond voters passed in 2008.
