In a tuneup for its rivalry match against Mira Costa and the ensuing CIF playoffs, Redondo’s girls volleyball program will host its annual Varsity Power Classic Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31 at three area high schools.

Defending champion Redondo is ranked No. 2 in CIF-Southern Section Division 1AA and is the top seed in the 32-team tournament followed by Rancho Cucamonga (No. 1, Div. 1A), 2014 runner-up Marymount (No. 10, Div. 1AA), Harvard-Westlake (No. 12, Div. 1AA), Sacred Heart (No. 13, Div. 1AA), Long Beach Poly, Ventura (No. 5, Div. 1A) and Village Christian (No. 1, Div. 2AA).

Pool play begins Friday at 3:30 p.m. Playing at Redondo Union High School will be Pool 1 (Rancho Cucamonga, Marlborough, Oaks Christian, Dana Hills), Pool 2 (Redondo, Chino Hills, La Reina, Team TBA), Pool 3 (Harvard-Westlake, Independence, Burroughs, Millikan) and Pool 4 (Flintridge Sacred Heart, Coronado, Thousand Oaks and Los Osos).

South Torrance will host Pool 5 (Marymount, St. Lucys, South Torrance, Tehachapi) and Pool 6 (Long Beach Poly, Valencia, Notre Dame Academy, Buena).

Competing at West Torrance will be Pool 7 (Ventura, Notre Dame, Santa Monica, Palos Verdes) and Pool 8 (Village Christian, Scripps Ranch, Oxnard, West Torrance).

First and second-place finishers in each pool advance to Gold Division competition that begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Redondo. South will host the Silver Division (third-place teams) while West will host the Bronze Division.

Admission is $5 per day ($3 for children). Schedules and results available on the RUHS athletic website.

Redondo will be going for its fourth consecutive outright Bay League title Tuesday when the Sea Hawks host rival Mira Costa at 7 p.m. Mira Costa is ranked No. 5 in CIF-SS Division 1AA and a win would not only give them a share of the Bay League crown, but a possible top-four seed in the CIF-SS Division 1AA playoffs.

Mira Costa is competing this weekend in the prestigious Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, a 16-team tournament featuring nine of the top 20 teams ranked in the state according to MaxPreps.

The Mustangs will have the opportunity to see four possible opponents in the upcoming CIF-SS Division 1AA playoffs including No. 1 Great Oak, No. 4 Corona del Mar, No. 7 Mater Dei and Newport Harbor.

CIF playoff seedings and brackets will be announced Friday, Nov. 6 and available at cifss.org.
