Roulette: what’s so great about outside bets?

When playing Roulette, whether that be for the first time or not, it’s important to know the ins and outs of each type of bet that’s available for you to place in order to get the full potential out of your gameplay. It doesn’t matter if you opt to play online Roulette for real cash or in a land-based establishment, for the best part, the bets you can place remain the same.

So, what’s so great about outside bets? Well, join us as we discover exactly what inside and outside bets are, as well as why the latter is always recommended to beginners.

Read on to find out more.

Inside vs outside bets

Bets in Roulette are separated into two main categories: inside and outside bets. The inside bets are the ones that are placed on the innermost sections on the table layout and include:

  • Straight up bets
  • Split bets
  • Street bets
  • Corner bets
  • Line bets
  • Five bets

These bets tend to have the highest payouts, but pose the most risk. On the other hand, there are the outside bets. These include:

  • Red/black
  • Odd/even
  • High/low
  • Dozen bets
  • Column bets

With lower risk, the outside bets, as previously mentioned, are recommended to beginners or those with a smaller bankroll.

What are the outside bets?

Outside bets – you’ve guessed it – are the bets you can place on the outside of the Roulette table layout.

Red/black

When placing a bet on either the red or black pockets, you’ll be predicting what colour pocket you think the ball is going to land in when the wheel stops spinning. This pays out 1:1.

Odd/even

Also paying out 1:1, this outside bet is a wager on whether you think the outcome will be a number that’s odd or even.

High/low

In Roulette, low numbers are classed as 1-18 and high numbers are 19-36. This bet is a prediction on whether you think the ball will rest in a pocket of one of the high numbers, or one of the low ones.

Dozens

A dozen bet is a bet on one or more of the three groups of 12 numbers. These include the 1st dozen (1-12) the 2nd dozen (13-24) and the 3rd dozen (25-36). This pays out 2:1.

Columns

A column bet is also a bet on 12 numbers. The table layout can be separated into three columns, and placing your bet on one of these will mean you’re making a prediction that one of the 12 numbers in the column win. This also pays out 2:1.

The best way to bet

Despite having lower payouts, most of the outside bets have just under a 50% chance of winning, which means there is less risk involved. The chances remain just under 50% because of the green single and double zero pockets. In fact, to improve your winning chances further, we recommend placing your bets on a game of European Roulette, as this variation of the wheel only has one green pocket – the single zero – as opposed to the single and double zero green pockets of American Roulette. This means that the European wheel has a house edge of 2.70%, rather than the 5.25% edge of the American wheel.
