Beach goers will be able to walk out on the hard pack sand, nearly to the ends of the Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach piers on Thursday, January 11 and Friday, January 12. On those days, at 3:43 p.m. on Thursday, and 4:24 p.m on Friday, the tides will reach lows of minus 1.7 feet. In the mornings on those same days, at 8:19 a.m. on Thursday and 9:04 on Friday, the tides will reach highs of 6.9 feet.

The “King Tides” will make a repeat appearance this year on February 9.

The public is invited to document with photographs the 8-foot swing in the tides. The photographs will be uploaded to the California Coastal Commission King Tide Project. The King Tide Project is collecting data to predict the impact of sea level changes resulting from climate change. Roundhouse Aquarium scientists will lead discussions about the King Tides at the pier meet-up.
