Bishop Montgomery proved its top ranking in CIF Southern Section Division 4-AA is no fluke Saturday, winning the Sea Hawk Classic at Redondo Union High School for its third tournament title this season.
The Knights easily handled Price, knocking off the No. 2 team in the 4-AA division 75-39 behind the play of Tournament MVP Lamond Murray Jr. who scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to earn his third tournament honor this year.
Bishop Montgomery reached the championship game after beating Christian Brothers of Tennessee 72-45 on Friday.
Price advanced to the finals after winning a 61-58 thriller over host Redondo. Derek Biale and Ian Fox led the Sea Hawks with 17 points and were named to the All-Tournament Team. Jeremiah Headley added 12 points for Redondo.
In the quarterfinals, Redondo defeated Folsom 76-50 behind Biale’s 27-point performance that included seven 3-pointers. Fox added 13 points, Chris Henderson posted 10 points and Darrien Touchstone contributed four points, three rebounds, three steals and one block.
In opening-round action, Redondo beat Rolling Hills Prep 66-42 behind a stingy defense that limited 6-foot-11 center Jimbo Lull to 16 points but only four in the second half.
Fox led the Sea Hawks with 18 points and Biale added 11 points in the win.
Prior to the Sea Hawk Classic, Redondo went 1-3 in the highly-competitive Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.
Mustangs finish strong
In the 23rd Annual Under Armour Holiday Classic hosted by Torrey Pines High School, Mira Costa finished on a high note, winning two consolation games after dropping its first two contests.
The Mustangs throttled Carson (NV) 50-27 Saturday behind Kevin Kim’s 13 points, Justin Strings’ 10 points and 10 rebounds and Cole Feaster’s eight points.
On Friday, Mira Costa defeated Austin (TX) 75-73. Strings scored a team high 16 points for the Mustangs while Oliver Mausner added 14 points.
In the second round, Mira Costa dropped a 69-68 heartbreaker to Douglas, (NV) in overtime. Feaster scored 26 points and Strings had 12 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Mustangs.
In the opening round, Mira Costa lost to Chino Hills 65-61. Feaster recorded 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, Strings had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Ryan Kassef scored 10 points for the Mustangs.
