The Coast Guard and L.A. County Lifeguards called off a search early Monday morning for a man who might have jumped from the Hermosa Beach Pier late Sunday night.
L.A. County Lifeguard Captain Tom Seth said a lifeguard saw a man in board shorts climb the gate to the pier just after 11 p.m. The lifeguard yelled at the man to stop, but the man continued to climb and jumped to the other side of the gate, Seth said.
The lifeguard opened the gate with a set of keys and attempted to follow the man down the pier but could not located him, Seth said.
Authorities are unsure if the man jumped or doubled back and wasn’t seen by the lifeguard, Seth said.
Seth said an employee of Sharkeez Bar talked to a man in board shorts who fit the description. Before fleeing the area, the man, who remains unidentified, told the employee at Sharkeez that he had jumped from the pier.
Seth said the search lasted several hours into the early morning hours. The search included a Coast Guard helicopter, and rescue boats from Bay Watch Del Rey and Redondo Harbor Patrol.
