Entries sought for 2023 Annual Community Art Show

The Palos Verdes Library District invites local artists and students to submit artwork for the Annual Community Art Show, to be held Nov. 6-Jan. 4 at the Peninsula Center Library. Artwork in most media is eligible, including painting, photography, mixed media, and sculpture. To enter, visit pvld.org/artinourlibrary and fill out the online application or pick up an entry form at any PVLD library.  The deadline for submissions is Sept. 25.

New art exhibit

“Life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula” is on display through Sept. 23 at the Malaga Cove Library, 2400 Vía Campesina, Palos Verdes Estates. The exhibit features paintings by 14 artists.

Volunteer opportunity

Volunteer with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Rapid Response Team Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to noon. Work alongside field staff to help protect important wildlife habitat. Assist with trail maintenance, fence building, and installing signage. New San Pedro art exhibit

Webster’s defines assemblage as “an artistic composition made from scraps, junk, and odds and ends. It also defines the term as “a collection of persons or things: gathering.” “Assemblagism” the exhibition fits both definitions: artwork made from repurposing and composing found and other materials, in addition to serving as a gathering for Southern California artists and artisans, each of whom will provide their own interpretation of the art form. The exhibit will be at the Loft Art Studios & Gallery, 401 S. Mesa St., San Pedro, Sept 7 – Oct 22. Sports luncheons to resume

The South Bay Athletic Club will kick off its 58th year at noon at H.T. Grill, 1701 S Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach. The group, which welcomes guests and new members, meets Fridays from September to June for lunch, friendship and to hear speakers ranging from John Papadakis’ annual USC football report to CIF Assistant Commissioner Thom Simmons to USA Diving Chairman Dave Gascon. A local high school coach also speaks most weeks. The SBAC has sponsored the annual South Bay All-Star boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball games. Redfield & Redfield Art Exhibition 

The Palos Verdes Art Center (PVAC) is hosting an art exhibit and sale exploring the legacy of landscape painting across two generations by showcasing the work of Palos Verdes plein air painter Thomas H. Redfield, Jr. (b. 1959), member of the Portuguese Bend Artist Colony, alongside a sampling of historical artwork by his great grandfather, acclaimed Pennsylvania Impressionist Edward Willis Redfield (1869-1965), leader of the New Hope School. The exhibition will be on view September 16 – November 11, 2023, with an artist reception on Saturday, September 23, 6-9 pm.  Gallery Hours are M-F, 9-5, Sat. 10-4, Sun. closed. Redfield and Redfield Artist Opening Reception

New photography exhibit 

A photography exhibit, “Lonely LA: Los Angeles Unveiled During the Early Months of COVID,” is on display Sept. 23-Oct. 19 at Peninsula Center Library, 701 Silver Spur Road, Rolling Hills Estates. The exhibit features works by photographer Jerry Fleury.

Abalone Cove cleanup

Los Serenos de Point Vicente docents will lead a clean-up at Abalone Cove from 9 a.m. to noon. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. You’re welcome to bring your favorite trash bucket and trash picker. The walk along the trail to the beach is moderate to strenuous. Wear sturdy shoes. Rain cancels.
