Costal clean-up day

Join Girl Scout Troop 5705, SeaLAB and Heal the Bay for International Coastal Clean-i[ day on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Redondo Beach Pier to help clean up our local beaches.

“On Coastal Cleanup Day, the people of our community come together to pick up the trash that is ruining our beautiful beaches,” said Giorgia Fujita, a troop 5705 member. The troop has spearheaded the day’s recruitment with flyers and social media. They are hoping to beat the 10,954 volunteer mark set in the Los Angeles County last year.

According to Mary-Claire Scanlon, the troop will be eligible to apply for the Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout Can receive. Other beaches included in the clean-up are the Manhttan Beach Pier, Dockweiler, R.A.T Beach, Abalone Cove, Long Beach, Mother’s Beach, Cabrillo State Beach, Palos Verdes and other local waterways. The organizers suggest that you come ready to work with hats, reusable water bottles, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. Food will be donated at the Redondo Pier location by Peet’s Coffee and Western Bagels.

Last year, according to Scanlon, 44,000 pounds of trash was collected in L.A. County.

“We’ve heard that trash from last years’ devastating tsunami in Japan will start washing up. So we will be looking for Japanese labels,” troop member Caleigh Ranjo said.

Volunteers will also be competing to find the “most unique item.”

“We care deeply about maintaining clean beaches because we love the beach ourselves and go to it often,” said Hailee Liberman, a troop 5705 member. “…we decided to help promote and be a part of this important cause.”
