The first Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, in 2009, drew 1,700 participants and raised an impressive $220,000. Last October 29, the 15th Annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship walk drew a crowd estimated at 20,000, and raised $3.1 million. The walk from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Pier, and back has raised over $24 million for local schools since its founding.
During a check presentation ceremony last Thursday, February 29 at Sauced BBQ and Spirits in El Segundo, over $1.5 million in proceeds from the walk were distributed to seven South Bay public school education foundations. The money comes at a time when most local school districts anticipate teacher layoffs due to cuts in State funding.
The Friendship Foundation, for which the walk was founded by Rabbi Yossi Mintz, and Skechers CEO Michael Greenberg, received a $1.1 million check. Those proceeds will go in part toward construction of the Friendship Campus, which is scheduled to open in fall 2025. The school will help prepare special needs students for the workplace.
With support from presenting sponsor Kinecta Federal Credit Union, approximately $300,000 was presented to college-bound high school students, nationwide, through the Skechers Foundation.
