Soroptimist International of Manhattan Beach (SIMB) presented their seventh annual LUNAFEST, a fundraiser with short films by, for, and about women at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center on March 10. According to Lunafest Chair Monica Frey, the film festival fundraiser has raised over $30,000. Fifteen percent of the proceeds went to benefit the Breast Cancer Fund, which “exposes and eliminates the environmental causes of breast cancer,” according to the Soroptimist website.
The rest of the proceeds went to SIMB in order to help fund their various projects, including Breast Cancer Comfort Bags, the Women’s Opportunity Award, the Ruby Award, the Violet Richardson Award, scholarships to high school students, and support to local organizations that help women and girls, as well as Soroptimist STOP Trafficking.
The Manhattan Beach club is part of the greater Soroptimist International service organization whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in our local communities and throughout the world. Soroptimist is a Latin word meaning “Best for Women.” If you are interested in learning more about Soroptimist International of Manhattan Beach visit their website at http://www.simanhattanbeach.org
