Art loft: “PADA Loft Show,” new work by the Photographic and Digital Artists (PADA), opens at the Loft in San Pedro with a free public reception Dec. 4, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., as part of the First Thursday Art Walk. Members of the group have garnered numerous awards for their art, which ranges from classic black-and-white photography experimental techniques like scanning and light painting. For this show, each artist fills five linear feet with works relating to his or her passion, from the close-at-hand to the exotic, from a flower bud to the cosmos.The public is invited to enjoy refreshments and discuss the works with the artists at the free Opening Reception, Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.  An afternoon reception, Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., offers another chance to view the works and meet the artists. Last call: 608 North hosts its last exhibition this month. It opens Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and is on display through December 28th, the gallery’s last day. The 11 artists included in the last exhibit are Lynn Attig, Angelina D’Arcy, Bernard Fallon, Jose Hernandez, Robert Mackie, Janet Milhomme, Edie Pfeifer, Gloria Plascencia, Tom Prettyman, Donald Rock and Patricia Woolley. The gallery will have had 111 artists at 608 NORTH (not counting the kid’s art show).  Most of these artists have been very supportive of the gallery but, after three years, the group is unable to keep the gallery going. Snow days: Alpine Village will be holding their 1st annual Christmas Faire on Saturday and Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. including snow for the kids. The snow will be blasted from an ice truck used for Hollywood film production with the feel and consistency of real snow. Holiday music will be provided by local artists, and German holiday specialty food/drink items will be served Including  traditional grilled bratwurst and Gluehwein, the German version of spiced mulled wine.  Of course, as the home of some of the best craft beers in the South bay, they will serve a great flight of holiday craft beers. Before there were extreme skiers and GoPro cameras there was Warren Miller flying down the sides of mountains with   his Bell and Howell. Miller celebrated his 90th birthday in Hermosa Beach on Saturday with family and friends. This Tuesday, November 9, at Redondo Union High Auditorium, he will celebrate the screening of “No Turning Back,” his 65th annual ski film.  The film is narrated by Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley and captures some of the world’s top skiers, including surfer-turned-skier Sierra Quitiquit, two-time Olympian Kaylin Richardson and stunt skier JT Holmes. The Redondo High Auditorium is at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Vincent Street in Redondo Beach.  On Wednesday, “No Turning Back” will screen at the Bruin Theater in Westwood Village, 948 Broxton Ave., Los Angeles.  Both screenings are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at WarrenMiller.com.

DANCE

On pointe: Performance of the Ballet Swan Lake by Li’s Ballet Troupe. Miss Li Zhang, a nationally recognized prima ballerina in China, founded Li’s Dance Studio in the San Gabriel Valley. The studio is a training ground for a complete artistic program of classical ballet with emphasis in developing an appreciation for dance, drama, discipline, physical fitness, and the enjoyment of music and movement. Li’s Ballet Troupe was formed in 1999 as an outgrowth of the dance studio and includes studio students of all ages. Their vision is a strong commitment to the art form and dedication to the joy of dancing. The troupe has an extensive repertoire and has performed both in the U.S. and abroad to great acclaim.The company performs Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Ticket Price: $20 for this event but for a $40 membership, four events including this one are included at no additional cost. Holiday chorale: El Camino College’s Concert Choir and Mixed Chorus will bring the holiday spirit to the South Bay with a performance titled “Stars and Angels Sing,” set for 8 p.m. December 6 in the Campus Theatre. The show will feature Bach’s Cantata 142 “For Us a Child is Born” and music by Michael Haydn and Moses Hogan, along with holiday favorites. Pianist Kenner Bailey will return to accompany director Joanna Medawar Nachef in the show. Tickets to the Concert Choir and Mixed Chorus performance are $10 and may be purchased at www.centerforthearts.org or by phone at (310) 329-5345. Get fresh: Fresh the event runs Saturday night from 6 to 9 p.m. South Bay Contemporary, a non-profit, hosts its inaugural gala event as to announce their plans for the future. Tickets are only $35 for an exciting evening of art, music, food, drinks, performance and good company. Featuring a sprawling art exhibition, performance art, live music, fresh food, and a silent auction of goods, services and fine art. Holiday tunes: Come celebrate the season with the Palos Verdes Symphonic Band, which will present its annual Holiday Concert on Sunday evening at 5 p.m.  The Palos Verdes Symphonic Band, under the direction of David Stanton, consists of 60 local musicians dedicated since 1962 to bringing the very best in concert band music to the South Bay community.  The program consists of traditional winter, Christmas, and Hanukkah favorites.  The band will feature a quartet of professional vocalists and will also spotlight the Hollywood Clarinet Quartet of Rheuben Allen, David Stanton, Mike Vaccaro, and Greg Huckins performing seasonal classics arranged by Dan Higgins. Tickets are $9 with free admission for children 12 years of age and under, and are available at the Botanic Garden just prior to concert time.
