South Bay Board Review May 2013

Surfboards by Davenport

Taking you back to the “Dawn of the Involvement Era,” circa 1967 ¾’s, when some of the world’s most versatile boards ever were being pumped up, before everybody hacked a few feet off for the en vogue “shortboard,” comes Davenport’s THE BAYONET.  Just in the cusp of the Golden Era of Surfing, the lighter board excels in redirectional turns and getting locked in the critical part of the wave and sipping the juice of the curl like a fine wine. With its overall pig pintail shape and slight more tail rocker, it works equally well in point breaks and Beach Breaks. Like under the happy feet of teamrider Tyler Critelli, it still leaves room to play in the noseriding department. Get yours and score a BAYONET to your arsenal! Available: 9’-10-6” with other dimensions classified.

Mission Surfboards

The Sonic is Mission Surfboard’s most high-performance, advanced board ever made by our designer! For expert surfers only. Low-entry rocker and a small kick out at the tail will keep the board loose when going vertical or out launching to the sky. We use our traditional rounded squash tail to loosen the control even more. The pocket will meet with a vee–single concave, a small double concave, and have a vee for dessert. This board is hungry for world-class waves and should be ridden as a thruster for point break and a quad for beach pocket breaks.

Nikau Kai

At 5’8, 20 wide 2, and 1/2 thick this NK Fish is a cross between the classic fish but with a modern twist. The versatile design features a more pulled in nose and a little more entry rocker to get it into some steeper surf but with a wide point further forward to get you into small junky stuff! Glass on Cedar Keel fins gives it the classic Skatey Feel we all know so well from the classic Fish!

SLOP STICK

If the Podge is the GROVELER of our board selection, the SLOP STICK would be its cousin. Borrowing bottom contour from our FANTASTIC FOUR, we have beefed up the rail thickness and placed a diamond tail in the rear to help release water off the back of the board as quickly as possible. By eliminating the swallow tail we loosened this quad up but still let it maintain the speed needed to drive through slow sections and “snap” off the top.

Stock Dimensions: 5’8” x 20” 2 5/8”

Ability: Intermediate/ Pro

Conditions: Knee-high to overhead gutless surf. Great for those days when you still want to wiggle but the surf has no push.

Recommended Size Ratio: 3-4” shorter than your standard shortboard
