One More Thing, Or Maybe Three or Four… Once in a while I find out about events too late to get them in our paper issue, hence this between-issues missive. It’s an epic week for dining events, so you might fill up your schedule with these:

High Spirits at Hey 19… If you know your premium gins you may be familiar with The Botanist, the extravagantly herbed potion made at the Bruichladdich distillery in Scotland. Hey 19 will be hosting a dinner this Wednesday, February 24 that will include five courses and a tasting of both the gins and whiskies of Bruichladdich. The menu will be a surprise, and the cost is a mere $50 – call 310-378-8119 for details… (4525 Calle Mayor, Torrance. 310-378-8119)

Scout’s Honor, It’s A Good Wine… It’s that season when the teams of smiling young people are outside stores and at malls selling girl scout cookies, and all you can think of is which wine will go best with them. Wait, you hadn’t wondered before? I’ll bet you do now, and if you want to find out then you should stop in at the South Bay’s most frivolous wine event. Uncorked will offer a tasting of “Savannah Smiles and Sancerre, Do-Si-Dos and Zinfandel” for the bargain price of $15 per person. No reservations needed, and the event goes from 6 to 9 p.m. Get that merit badge you always deserved for successful use of a corkscrew without driving the cork into the bottle… (302 Pier Avenue, Hermosa. 424-247-7117)

Special Deal on Basque Dining By the Boats… A Basque Kitchen is offering a special deal this week: a traditional Basque set menu for only $55 for two, or $95 for four. You’ll get an array of authentic tapas including the famous Bayonne ham, squid in its own ink, and mixed meat stew – for the whole menu check their website at abasqkitchen.com. It’s a chance to have an authentic and exotic experience at a modest price. Hurry, because the last day is February 27… (136 North International Boardwalk, Redondo. 310-376-9215)

The Basque-Tunisian Connection… Adnen and Lenora Marouani are superb at cooking North African food, though they don’t get too many chances to do so as they are busy running the popular Barsha wine bar and gourmet store. They’ll be making a rare appearance as chefs with a surprising collaborator: Chef Bernard Ibarra of Mar’Sel at Terranea. The event is called “A Night in Tunisia,” and it will be held this Sunday, February 28th, at A Basq Kitchen in Redondo. Seven courses with wine will be served at two seatings, at 5 and 7:30 p.m. You can see the menu and get more details at the Eventbrite page – book now because space is limited…

And An El Segundo Celebration… Sausal is just across the street from El Segundo Brewing, so it is probably no great surprise that sooner or later those two would put together a food and beer pairing. They have done so, and it’s scheduled for Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. Feast on a goat cheese, Jalapeno popper, and bacon salad, adobo tamale, and their smoked and braised short ribs plus side dishes, all paired with freshly brewed pale ale and IPA’s. It costs a mere $45 plus tax and tip, a bargain by any standard. Call 310-322-2721 for reservations… (219 Main Street, El Segundo)
