Summer’s Almost Gone
An observation, and a Doors title from “Waiting for the Sun.” The band Strange Days plays a tribute to the 1960s classic rockers from 6 to 8 p.m. at the end of the Redondo Beach Pier. Congratulations to Gil Mares for being featured in last Sunday’s L.A. Times Calendar section. His work is on view in “Shipping Out: The Photography of Gil Mares,” and can be seen this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at Michael Stearns Studio 347, located at 347 W. Seventh St., San Pedro. An artist reception is set for Saturday, Sept. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Scavenging for materials
“Post Waste: Sustainable Art,” curated by Tracey Weiss, is a group show going on view this evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at South Bay Contemporary, 401 S. Mesa St., third floor, San Pedro. It’s an exhibition of artwork that is made predominantly, if not solely, from discarded consumer waste. What comes out of these non-traditional materials can be a wonder and a surprise. The Palos Verdes Symphonic Band performs its annual Labor Day concert, “Mariachi on the Meadow,” at 5 p.m. outdoors on the meadow at the South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd., on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The featured group is Mariachi Tesoro. The 60-piece symphonic band, conducted by David Stanton, will accompany them and play additional genre-related selections.
