
Triathlon: Redondo Beach athletes emerged victorious in the 33rd San Diego International Triathlon, highlighted by Chris Foster’s sixth win at the event.The 33-year-old finished the 1 kilometer swim, 30K bike and 10K run in 1 hour, 29 minutes, 23.4 seconds to capture the men’s title. Taylor Spivey, 24, a Los Angeles County Lifeguard JG instructor at Torrance Beach, won the women’s crown at 1:39:58.6 seconds.
Tennis: The 3rd annual Jester & Pharley Phund Benefit Doubles Tennis Tournament will be held at Alta Vista Park, 715 Julia St., Redondo Beach on Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. – 5p.m. with proceeds supporting the donation of the late David Saltzman’s book “The Jester Has Lost His Jingle” to children being treated for cancer. Swimming: Any contestant who did not compete in the 2014 Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim and would like to enter this year’s event on Sunday Aug. 2 must pass a 500-meter “check out” swim offered at the Hermosa Beach Pier July 11, 18 and 19 from 9-11 a.m. Decisions of lifeguards at “check out” swims are final. Beach Volleyball: Olympic silver medalist Mike Dodd and US Jr. National Team coach Patty Dodd are offering beach volleyball camps for boys and girls ages 8-17 to be held at Rosecrans Ave. in Manhattan Beach. Three Monday through Thursday camps are available the weeks of July 20 (Patty Dodd) and Aug. 10 (Mike Dodd) from 2:30 – 5 p.m. each day. Cost is $220 per camp or $60/day. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) will hold the third of four Marine Summer Series tournaments on Tuesday, July 14 at the Marine Street courts in Manhattan Beach. The 4-on-4 Co-ed Tuesday Beach Volleyball League begins July 14. Games will be north of the Hermosa Beach Pier from 6-8 p.m. with a maximum of 44 teams. Billed as the largest co-ed 4’s beach volleyball tournament in the nation, Smackfest celebrates its 22nd year Saturday, July 18 on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. Competition runs from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will feature many costume-themed teams. Proceeds benefit So Cal Foundation for Children (SCFC). The Dave Williams Memorial Pro Division will offer cash and prizes worth $5,000. Proceeds and raffle from the Pro Division will be donated to USA Volleyball’s fund in Williams’ name.
